Jackie's Journey "The Price of Freedom!"


 

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: 

That all men created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator

with certain unalienable rights,

that among these are life, liberty

and the pursuit of happiness.”

 We are all familiar with these words but, not so well-known, the concluding words of the Declaration of Independence reads, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred Honor.”  Fifty-six signatures of great patriots follow these profound words. These were the American heroes to the core!

 And what did they get for pledging their lives, fortunes and honor for our country? 

·      Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.

·      Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

·      Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

·      Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy.  He sold his home and property to pay his debts and died in rags.

·      Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.  He served in Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.

·      Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

·      At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwalls had taken over his home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.  The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

·      Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.  The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months.

·      John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.  For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.  A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.  Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

 Such were the stories and sacrifice of the great Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution.  These great men were not wild-eyed, rebellious ruffians.  They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security…but they valued liberty more!

 So… this July 4th, as we celebrate our freedoms

with family and friends,

take a few minutes to silently thank these founding fathers

who paid such a great price for America’s freedom?

 Freedom is never free!

Jackie's Journey " Indiana Jones of the Darien!"

We named our plane  “Wings on the Wind”  Psalm 104: 3-4

 Scott Wolfe saved my life!  Scott was our “missionary pilot”.  In the jungles of the Darien, near the Colombian border, is a Kuna village on the river Pucuro.  In 1974, my husband Ralph Johnson and I, with our two young daughters, were living among these people when every man, woman and child was besieged with a severe epidemic.  Our partners were on furlough and our small clinic was open day and night to meet the demands for anti-biotics’, etc.   I was the last one to contract the fever.  The symptoms were acute and my immune system was already compromised from exposure and lack of sleep.  As my temperature rose and hit 106 degrees, we called for help on our daily 12:30 “check-in contact” on our two-way radio, with Mary and Scottie. 

 A huge storm had rolled in and the skies were black with fierce wind and rain. We knew that it was humanly impossible for a plane to land on our “band aide” air strip that would require Scott to swoop down in the dark and land on the steep 20’ bank over the river and stop before colliding with the massively 100’ tall wall of giant trees at the other end…that is, if the tiny strip could even be spotted in the vast jungle and its dense canopy!

 Scott and Mary listened as we shared our concerns and I heard my husband say, “There is no visibility, Scott and the “wind-sock” is wildly blowing out of control.  There is no access to us…”  To which we heard Scottie reply…” I’m on my way!!”  Shocked, we strongly encouraged against his attempting to get to us…but…he was already gone!

 Within an hour and a half, we heard, over the intermittent lightning and thunder, the roar of “Wings on the Wind”!  That plane, with that brave missionary pilot, had made it to our remote station and as the sound grew louder, we prayed for an almost completely blind and difficult landing!  And he did it!  I was carried to the dugout that would get me across the river to that waiting plane…with the storm getting worse!

 Scott put that Cessna plane in gear and within a few minutes of his landing, we were in take-off mode and in the air heading for the hospital in Panama City.  Scott made an emergency landing in Yavisa for a medic, as there was fear I was going into shock.  Arriving in Panama City, we were given just enough time to pull me out of the plane onto a gurney and as they swiftly moved me toward the ambulance, I heard the armed soldier say to Scott, “Get off this strip, they are rioting in Panama City and you are the last plane to land here!”  I watched as my two little girls left in the plane to be lovingly cared for by Mary.

 What a sovereign God with perfect timing we have.  Scott, a faithful missionary pilot, and Mary will never know how grateful I am for their selfless love and service to us on that unforgettable dark, stormy day on the field of Panama.

“Sometimes God lets a stinging blow fall on your life. The blood spurts. The nerves wince.  The soul cries out in agony. The blow seems to you an appalling mistake.  But it is not, for you are the most priceless jewel in the world to God.” J.H. McC   All of us have lived to experience one or more of these times.  But when I recently read this quote, my youngest daughter came to mind. It’s her birthday on Wednesday. 

 She is a perfect example of a child of God that does not quarrel with God’s process in her life and is continually responsive with gratefulness.  “A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.”  Gratitude is the memory of the heart. She takes the blow and welcomes the pressure, disappointment and pain, and simply and quietly…matures! She understands God’s extended grace. She has always been able to walk into a room and fill it to the brim with enthusiasm and energy! She can, without any effort on her part, entertain us for hours.  Her presence consistently brings joy wherever she is.  I cannot imagine my life without her in it!

“By His wounds we are healed”! Isaiah 53

The cross is the center of our commemorating the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  His selfless and sinless sacrifice in our place is our reason to celebrate and praise His Name.  We call the holiday Easter and for a moment in time we stop and rehearse His ultimate sacrifice…His life for ours on that thorny and “thistled” old rugged cross.  Not only did he suffer and die for us, but on the third day He rose from the dead and gave us the promise of a resurrected life after death!  

 This deliberate and divine act of love was to give our lives promise, plan and purpose.  We are destined and programmed to serve others first, not ourselves.   In our Easter release to the Princess Parable Series, “A Royal Easter Story”, we introduced our five young knights who present a challenge that draws our young princesses into a chariot race that reveals the truth of what the cross teaches. 

 Do you live a life selflessly and sacrificially serving others?

  We cannot be consumed with a life that seeks its own and find contentment and life abundantly.  It is an impossibility.  Local churches, before “lock-down”, opened their doors on Good Friday to give us the opportunity to take a personal account of our commitment to our first love and renew our loyalty to live as Jesus challenges us to live…Holy!  We are reminded to live serving others, as He did, with eternal values and purpose in view.

 As moms, we are dedicated to living and then… teaching the character of Christ to our little princes and princesses.  We focus on drawing their attention to the importance of serving, helping and caring for others.  That is why we find ourselves saying, “Can you comfort your little brother, he’s hurting?” or “Will you help mommy?” 

  Teaching by example, without excuse, is the most powerful tool in our toolbox!  We are “known and read” by these little eyes and ears.  They know if the cross is real in us, or not.  We don’t fool them but we do confuse them when our life message does not speak the reality of Christ in us!

Are your little ones confused?

 “Then said Jesus to his disciples, IF any man will come after me,

 let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

Matt. 16: 24

 The cross holds the hope of humanity.  Denying self-life (our pride and selfishness in all its ugly forms) …and taking up His cross (His desires and His perfect Will for us) …  authenticates His life in us.  Living life consistently with no unconfessed sin and nothing between another person and ourselves, enables us to follow Him.  “His crucifixion is the key; His resurrection the door…it is only by His death that we have the mandate to enter into the gates of eternal life.  His door is open always.  Christ is King.”  Isrealmore Ayivor

Jackie's Journey "Unbearable Pain!"

I am writing this blog through tears.  I am reminded this morning of the gravity of life, time and opportunity.  My heart grieves for the child left behind, as she stands on the threshold of her life alone. She faces the inevitable future without the joy of being accompanied by her mother, her cheerleader and friend, who left us abruptly, this morning!  Yesterday, this 50-year-old mother was active, vibrant and healthy.  A mother that understood giving, serving and sharing.  It is unthinkable to realize she is no longer with us.

 In the night her heart stopped and she was quickly taken.  We all stand here, confounded and in deep pain, but none like the daughter who was left behind.  January 15th is the day this young college student was to fly to the other side of the USA and enter University.  Her mom was excited to accompany her and get her settled into the dorm, meet her new friends and share in this new step of her daughter’s life. How can this be?  In an instant…all lives have changed. “

 What now?

 Life is more than Covid-19, masks, elections and consuming daily activities.  Although these are important, death makes us cognizant of the eternal aspect of all life and re-aligns our perspective.  It seems to be the great leveler, if we are brave enough to face it.  “There is nothing permanent but change”! We are not always prepared for the unexpected.  We are often overwhelmed by the shock.  The goal is to keep in harmony with His will and direction through the maze. 

 We see things not as they are, but as we are.  How we respond to the unexpected or the seemingly impossible reveals the all of us.  We can alter our life by altering our attitude of mind. To see God in everything makes life the greatest adventure there is!  Someone once said that living is like “licking honey off a thorn” …I think death is like this.  We cannot see what God has in the future and often it includes the desperation of our loss to get us in perfect harmony with His plan and purpose for our lives. It reminds us of His control and care and calls us to grab hold of His hand and follow even more closely. The promise and prayer for this family…

 “You removed my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent.  O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.  I will be glad and rejoice in Your love, for You saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul…My future is in Your hands…” (Psalm 30:11&12; 31:7)

Jackie's Journey "Good-bye...for Now"

There is no more influential or powerful role on earth than a mother.  As significant as political, military, educational, or religious public figures may be, none can compare to the impact made by mothers.  Their words are never fully forgotten, their touch leaves an indelible impression and the memory of the presence lasts a lifetime.

I ask you, “Who else is anywhere near that influential?”

 For seventy-seven years my beautiful mother taught me about genuine love and Motherhood.  She said, “Jackie, love is NOT a passion.  It is the pulse of sacrifice…”

 I watched her, as she maneuvered through the ups and downs of life.

 She was fierce, strong and courageous, especially in the latter years without my Father.

She faced life with grace each day with acceptance of God’s hand and timing.  She wanted to go with Dad seven years ago!

She had no fear of old age (which is the assumption that we still have many years of life ahead of us!)

 “The length of our days is seventy years or eighty,

IF we have the strength; yet this span is but trouble and sorrow

And passes quickly and then we fly away.!” (Psa. 90:10)

 She learned to be satisfied in the morning with His unfailing love.  She was sometimes disappointed because at 101 and in perfect health, she thought she would just quietly slip away in her sleep, but alas,…she would awaken to another morning here.

 She may not have sung out loud for joy (music was not her thing!), but she was glad for everyday.

She still looked forward to any, or all of us coming and visiting with her in her home.

She was a good listener…and I can remember my high school friends coming home with me…just to talk and be with her!

She was wise and discerning.  It was impossible to fool her.  She saw right through all of us!

She taught me, by example:

·      To number my days… “Jackie, make them count!”

·      To live in love and loyalty to my husband

·      To be deliberate with my heritage

·      To think generations and

·      To see how short and quickly time passes.

 See, Mama, I am paying attention.  Your job has been well done…even up to the finish line…

 Thank you for leading the way, for

For showing me the pulse of sacrificial love…

I will love you forever…

Jackie's Journey "Christmas...Already?"

“A blanket of powdery snow covered the castle walls.  The princess sisters found themselves in a scene right out of a fairytale.  The most remarkable winter in years has arrived.  Christmas is only a night away.  Princesses Joy, Grace, Faith, Charity and Hope are surrounded by glittering gifts, a huge Christmas tree in the parlor, sparkling candles, and a dramatic night sky with one star bigger and brighter than all the others.  A sudden rap at the door of the castle puts the kingdom on immediate alert!  Will a marauding band of outlaws ruin the princesses’ perfect Christmas Eve?”

This is an exciting day!  It is only one week before we set time aside to gather with family and friends to celebrate the birth of our Savior. Our seasonal book,  “A Royal Christmas to Remember” was written for your little princess to capture the true essence of why we remember the arrival of a tiny baby in a manger.  This book is available through Amazon.com, christianbooks.com, Barnes and Noble, your local Christian book store…  

 This is the second of our seasonal books.  Its appearance before the holiday season is perfectly timed to arrive before the Christmas crunch.  Its story is timeless, taken from Luke 12:15-21, the Parable of the Rich Young Ruler.  It is dedicated to the parents who strive to rescue their children from the materialistic focus of this time of year.  It is for those of you who desire to introduce your child to the person, who is the “reason for this season”…Jesus Christ.

 In Sally Clarkson’s book “Ministry of Motherhood” she wrote:

 “Children need the authentic strength that comes from the true foundation of a biblical worldview and a proper understanding of the real Christ who is worthy of their worship!  They need an unwavering moral and spiritual compass that will help them weather today’s storms and will guide them for the rest of their lives.  They also need to see what a real faith looks like when lived day in, day out, so they will have a pattern to follow.”

 The Princess Parables have been written with God’s worldview that teaches biblical character, eternal values and is designed to cultivate a desire to be a child of the true King of Kings!  The Princess Parable Series is bible-based on a parable taught by the greatest teacher that ever lived.  They encompass character-emphasized prince and princesses with eternal values targeted.  A Royal Christmas to Remember is written with these principles imposed onto every page.

Jackie's Journey "The Journey Goes On..."

“Faithful is He who calls you, who will also do it”.

I Thessalonians 5: 24

 How many years have you been married?  

This past week was our wedding anniversary.  My 100-year-old mother was married 72 years and my husband’s parents were married 47 years, so 54 years does not seem inordinately long to either of us…but, on the other hand, it has certainly been the proving ground for our developing our loyalty to God!

 I met my Prince at the University and if you were to ask our college friends, they would be astounded that we are celebrating 54 years together. Most did not give us two years! Ralph and I are polar opposites in almost every way.  However, we had the one element in marriage that will guarantee longevity…we were both individually committed to “burn out” serving God wherever He led us. My husband’s godly zeal and spiritual leadership in our home has been preeminent and a constant for the past 54 years!  

I have been blessed with a man who has loved me unconditionally and when he said “for better or worse” he meant it.  We have weathered the storms of life with near death experiences, more than once, and his loyalty to God and me is noteworthy.  Ralph and I continue to learn and grow together.  Choosing to live in deference is a necessary key to our taking our two strong wills and finding harmony in God’s will.

 Ralph’s name means “bold counselor” and that he is! He is, also, a man of motion and direction.  He was once told he is an” afflicter of the comfortable and a comfort to the afflicted!”  I could write a book with all his wise one-liners, biblical formulas and scriptural definitions.  His capacity to see things in Scripture and interpret them from the inside out to give a total new look to a familiar verse is uncanny!  

 We were told in our early married life regarding missions that “Christian missionaries are people whose passion is to make the Lord Jesus known to the whole world.  They are completely under the command of King Jesus (Ralph often rolls out of bed, stands at attention and salutes heavenward, committing his day!), and they will go anywhere, under any circumstances, for no pay, with poor living conditions and food, even though no one ever notices. They know their Sovereign God is watching every minute, and that is the only reward and joy they seek…a true missionary is someone who will risk everything for the sake of the lost of this world…this is my husband!

 We have a precious heritage that is a loving reminder of our loyalty to God and our responsibility into the third and fourth generations.

Our lives are based on Proverbs 3: 5,6.  Trusting the Lord with all our hearts and allowing Him to direct our paths and Matt. 6:33: “Seeking first the King of heaven” and allowing Him to supply everything we need for life and godliness.

 We are convinced that He takes the weak and confounds the mighty.  We are proof of this truth and His faithfulness…I Corinthians 2: 1-2 speaks my heart, like Paul’s, when he says, “…I did not come to you with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.  For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  I came to you in weakness and fear and with much trembling.  My message was not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom but God’s power”.

 If we had these 54 years to do over again, we would like to serve more… and better, as we were bought with the price of His blood.  Romans 6: 16-18 says, “We were slaves of sin and now are slaves of righteousness”.   We work daily on being better slaves!

Jackie's Journey "A Treasure Found!"

This little dolly is the daughter of a my dear niece.  She is reading her Princess Parable Grace book from The Princess Parable Series.  I was reminded of the message of the parable in this book and challenged again to live in the blessing of God’s pursuing love, understanding that grace “is the will and power to do what God desires.” Phil. 2: 3  Not my desires with my will in mypower!

 I certainly know what my will is!  I am tempted daily, multiple times to give in to the cry of what my will wants!  We live in an age where entitlement and personal demands are rampant.  We see it in our homes, relationships, schools, churches and communities.  We saw it in the jungles of Panama.  The human heart is wicked and deceived. Deception believes a lie that begins when our mind and emotions agree on an error and it is fulfilled when we willto do it.  The world is screaming for personal rights…we hear it every day when one of us is complaining!  Contentment is elusive and unattainable by the ungrateful heart.  Whining and “woe is me” has become an acceptable sin! 

 As mom’s, God’s desire is for us to learn to walk in Hisway and to teach our little ones His way.  They learn ourway by watching and listening to us!   We will be held accountable for the spiritual teaching our children receive from us.  Seeing that they are nourished from God’s Word and given godly instruction is within our sphere of responsibility. 

 Many years ago, I sat in a hammock deep in the middle of the Panamanian jungle with my two little princesses, reading to them. Each book I picked up presented a unique challenge. It told a story but did not introduce my girls to a biblical worldview or a character quality they could incorporate into their young lives.  I would purpose to impose these two principles into the pages of every book I picked up in terms they could understand that had eternal values targeted. My heart was burdened for just such a book, not just for myself but also, for other young mothers who needed a tool that would give their little princesses both of these elements with a clear application and a pragmatic understanding of the Word of God.

 My friend’s little granddaughter is being given the opportunity at a very young age to fall in love with a biblical parable. She will be challenged to respond to God’s pursuing love in the diary of Princess Grace at the end of the book.  Her heart will be inspired to live outside herself and to adopt attitudes that will bring blessing on her life.  This is the book I dreamed of, as a young mom living on the Colombian border!    Jeanna, my co-author, and I are blessed to be able to make “The Princess Parable Series”and now,  “A Royal Easter Story”, available to you and your little princesses.
